The UK Bathing Water Season has officially begun!

May 15, 2025

The UK bathing water season, running from 15 May to 30 September, marks the period when coastal and inland waters are at their busiest. During this time, the Environment Agency (EA) in England, alongside equivalent bodies in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, rigorously monitors water quality to ensure public safety. Central to this effort is microbiology testing, which assesses water for bacterial contamination that could pose health risks.

Water utility companies are required to oversee and analyse wastewater discharges from their sewage treatment facilities and combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to comply with environmental regulations established by the EA. This involves examining wastewater for microbial pollutants that could impact bathing waters downstream, particularly during heavy rain events when CSOs may release untreated sewage.

Microbiology testing focuses on detecting faecal indicator organisms, specifically Escherichia coli (E. coli) and enterococci, and ensures bathers remain informed about water safety, reducing the risk of waterborne illnesses.

Samples are transported to our Coventry laboratory under controlled refrigerated conditions and analysed by our dedicated, round the clock team within 24 hours. The laboratory uses membrane filtration technique to quantify E. coli and enterococci, a process that involves filtering water through a sterile membrane, incubating it on selective media, and then counting bacterial colonies.

ALS are thrilled to participate in microbiology testing for the UK bathing water season, contributing to cleaner and safer coastal waters. By combining rigorous microbiology testing at ALS, with transparent reporting from the water utilities, we are helping to safeguard public health and promote cleaner waters, ensuring safe enjoyment of its coasts and inland sites.
